  The radio industry 

public service broadcaster -a media outlet that aims to serve the public good, rather than profit
commercial radio- a broadcast that plays music, speech based entertainment and is primarily funded by adverts.
community radio- is not for profit radio service that provides local programming community or area of interest.
podcast- a digital audio or video file that is available for download or streaming over the internet
DAB radio- uses digital technology to distribute your favourite radio stations
Licence fee- paid organisation for permission to own, use or do something 
Royal charter- a legal document issues by the monarch to give and organization legal standing and specific rights 
remit- the area of activity that a person or group has the authority to deal with.
convergence- the process of combining different media technologies and communication tool into a single experience

3 types of radio in the UK

public service- this operates several national stations and many local radio stations 
commercial- funded by adverting to make profit mostly focused on one type of genre 
community- a local radio that could be in things like hospitals or towns, not for profits

why is the archers so popular?

The archers is popular because it has been running since 1951 after WW2. It as been relating to rural areas such as farm and country life. Each episode runs for 13 minutes long and is posted everyday at 7PM and is apart from on Saturday. It is also shown the day after at 2PM as well as an omnibus every Sunday morning. The topics on this soap opera can be serious as well as not serious such as things like farming , relationships It is listened to by more than 5 million people.  It is the longest running soap opera. 

story lines- selling a house, Kirsty trying to avoid joy, putting on a local show, litter picking, play for locals, a vicar/church , Gavin been from prison. joy and mick are having a relationship and moving in together.

characters-one called joy the nosy neighbour , Kirsty estate agent, Gavin the welsh guy been in prison and now apologetic , mick who is Santa and is living in a van.

The Archers stays popular by having realistic storylines such as domestic abuse like #FreeHelen causing people to raise money (£100k) for a charity that helps abuse in real situations.           


The BBC uses various platforms such as the archers website and DAB. This Archers is available on things such as Radios, Websites, smart speakers and BBC sounds, which is played on the radio at 7PM daily and a repeat at 2PM the following day, as well as an omnibus every Sunday morning. These podcasts are able to download and catch up after 30 days. The Archers is promoted through social media such as X and Facebook. Fans engage with uses through social medias and on the BBC website.

Audiences listen to The archers because some people might relate to the storyline or the character, They may continue to listen as they find interest in that character.  It appeals to the audience as you can learn things from the stories such as people who may live in the cities hearing about how people live in the countrysides or on farms. The show engages the audience by allowing them to have access to their website so they can see information on the character as well as giving reviews, some fans may use social media or friends to spread their interests in the show. The audience may also listen to the Archers as they might find it entertaining, some may like to sit back and relax to a story that they could enjoy or relate to.

Commercials gets funded by the adverts whereas public service broadcast gets funds from the Tv license.

The Archers is to inform people about how people live in the current world. For example how some people may not be in a good position when it comes to financial issues. This can be seen thought the character Mick who lives in a van. For some they might not be aware of this happening.  

The archers is able to educate people. As some who might live in cities leading to their communities to be different. For example they can give information and show how farms and people in the country side live. This would link as they might not ever experience living in the countryside.

  The archers is aimed at the audience because there storylines are realistic which may interest them into listening to it. 

Audiences can listen to the Archers due to social interaction. This is because the people who listen to Archers make fan pages and are also able to discuss it on websites. By this interactions it allowed the radio to raise around £100,000 for a charity to help others from a story that occurred in the Archers.  This brings people together who enjoy listening to this.
